Grandmaster D.W. Kang: A Legacy of TaeKwonDo
Grandmaster D.W. Kang, a distinguished 9th degree Black Belt, introduced TaeKwonDo to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1971. He has devoted his life to instilling values such as respect, honor, and tradition. His dojangs have consistently drawn in eager learners, as TaeKwonDo encompasses much more than a martial art; it embodies a way of life. Through dedicated practice, students cultivate character, integrity, self-respect, health, and a sense of community-essential life skills that are often overlooked. This discipline nurtures a positive mindset and enriches one’s perspective on life.
For 55 years, Grandmaster Kang’s TaeKwonDo has served as a beacon of excellence, both on and off the mat. His unwavering commitment to teaching and mentoring individuals, ranging from young children to adults of all ages, has facilitated transformative journeys that are truly fulfilling to witness over time. Being recognized as the best TaeKwonDo instructor in the world in both 1981 and 1988 is a remarkable honor. Additionally, collegiate champion Jennifer Laney, of Kang’s TaeKwonDo brought home a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. In 2009, he was inducted into the World TaeKwonDo Hall of Fame, underscoring his significant contributions to the martial arts community.
Grandmaster Kang has produced over 6,000 Black Belts, emphasizing the importance of proper etiquette, humility, and politeness both within and outside the dojang. Students learn to value others while managing their own egos. Honor and integrity are intertwined in training, with a focus on moral correction that helps students discern right from wrong and remain honest, even when no one is watching. Self-control taught in the dojang emphasizes that masters of martial arts must first master their own actions and emotions, using discipline to resolve conflicts. TaeKwonDo is truly a way of life, fostering self-worth and understanding that resonates daily.
Together with his son, Master Bong Kang, and many of Kang’s Masters, Grandmaster Kang continues to impart genuine care, love, and respect for TaeKwonDo and the community.
